Used Spokeo.com personal search services. Gave them a credit card number which automatically signed me up for recurring monthly charges. Went back and suspended recurring charges the next day. Not trusting that this would end the recurring I called the credit card company and asked for a new card and different number.
They did not make any further charges to the account but they passed on the credit info to another company called PrivPro, also located in Pasadina. I began getting $14.95 monthly charges from PrivPro for credit card security services (of all things).
I called them and they promised me a refund of $29.90 for which I an still waiting.
Two lessons:
First. Be sure and look for hidden checked boxes when dealing with any internet company that gets your credit card information.
Second. Don't think that reporting a lost or stolen card will prevent recurring company charges from following you to your new credit card number.
I let it slip by me the first month but that was my fault and I thought that a new credit card number would insulate me from fraudulent charges. It won't happen again.
