Avoid Waste Management!

My husband and I have been customers of Waste Management for years, but customer loyalty means nothing to the company. We wanted a two yard dumpster for our home a few years ago, which they agreed to by then creating a commercial account, which led to us having to sign a contract. The first contract we signed was for two years and did not have the auto-renew clause built in. The second contract came to us one year into our two-year contract period, saying they needed to have the most current contract on file. Funny how you don't have to sign or initial the second page of the contract, which shows terms and conditions. We went to cancel our contract about a year ago and we were told we would have to pay a massive cancellation fee, as we had signed a three year agreement. We let them know we're certain it was for two years so they sent a "copy" of the signed contract, which has our signature on the main page and contained a blanket term page for the second page, without a signature or initial.interesting, right? At any rate, we were finally able to rid ourselves of them when we moved recently, but still had to pay a removal fee for the container of $150. Our service was officially over as of June 30th. We got the invoice and it's for $199. The invoice is incredibly confusing and doesn't add up - anywhere. After three voicemail messages, I got a return call from our account manager, who tried to give me a song and dance about a fuel surcharge which was prorated based on a percentage of the $150 and it's around $40 and has something to do with the month of July... I said, I'm looking at the fuel surcharge fee and it shows $8. $150 $8=$158, not $199. And, we are no longer customers as of June 30th, so how are we getting billed for anything in July? She kept repeating herself about the surcharge being based on a percentage of the $150... And then offered to send another invoice after the end of the month which might "make more sense". I declined, because our account would probably then show as past-due and they would probably try to nail us with late fees and penalties. We're just going to pay this final invoice in order to be DONE with this company. If you can avoid Waste Management as your trash service provider, please do! They will invoice you for charges that do not make sense, they can't provide reasonable explanations as to why you're being charged certain things, and they have the worst contract that is almost impossible to get out of. (To cancel, you have to send them notification 90 days in advance of the auto-renew date, by registered snail-mail. Yeah. Try to remember that by marking a calendar three years out.) We now have a new trash service where we pay about 30% less and do NOT have a contract for service! I hope the word gets out and people start shopping around for competitive services to WM!
