I was looking for a computer on Craigslist, and saw an ad for an iMac priced VERY low. The contact e-mail was [email protected] in the Craigslist ad. After inquiring about the item, I was soon contacted by Valerie Altman who was very nice, but claimed to have recently relocated to Toronto. She provided pictures that were different from the ad (cloth background and a wireless mouse instead of the trackpad pictured in the ad) and wanted to use a company she'd found (CCL Logistics) to provide a secure transaction that would allow me to check the item before she received the payment.
After reading Craigslist's page about what to look out for (relocation outside of the US, below-market pricing, third-party involvement, etc.), I did my research and found a few helpful things. I became sure of the scam when I read that CCL Logistics is a legitimate company in the UK, but the Canadian company is a fake.
I fortunately did not go through with the purchase, but I just wish there was a way to prevent others from getting ripped off!
