I received a convincing-looking check from John Greene Logistics Co.in Titusville, FL for $3,990.00 drawn on Seaside National Bank and Trust. Both of these are real and (to my knowledge) reputable institutions. There was a printing error on the check in that it displayed the bank as "SEASIDE NATIONAL BANK AND STRUST, " so these checks may be from a lot that was rejected but not destroyed. Accompanying the check is a letter dated April 1 from Stonegate Financial Services in Oxford UK. The letter presents itself as a "PRIZE CLAIM / FINAL NOTIFICATION" with a "CLAIM NO: JD/HGB-0202." The letter explains that I'm one of the declared winners of the MEGA LOTTERY in the UK held on Feb. 25, with ticket # 408662257 drawing winning number 40-56-78-81-03, and that I'm entitled to $150,000.00. The letter advises me to contact claim agent LLOYD LEWIS at 1-289-892-3517. The check and letter arrived in an envelope with a badly bitmapped version of the COSTCO WHOLESALE logo printed in the return address area (again, likely a printing rejection) and a Canada Post mark in the postage area. Companies should insure that their rejected checks, envelopes and other commercially printed materials are destroyed.
