I filled out the information to request an extra copy of my toddler's birth certificate; they ask for credit card information at the beginning of the transaction, before telling you the total, which should have been my cue to leave the website. When the total amount due was shown, it was $38, from various fees, though the cost of the birth certificate itself is $10. At that point, I didn't click to complete the transaction, but closed the website directly, deciding it wasn't worth that cost for a second birth certificate. However, hours later I had an email from Vitalchek stating that my order had been submitted. I immediately cancelled the order, following the instructions given in the email, and was told I would be charged a $10 fee to cancel. I emailed the company and received no response. When the $10 charge appeared on my credit card, I called my credit card company to let them know it was a scam and to have it removed. They removed it, but I hope that sometime Vitalchek will be forced to repay the money they've stolen, rather than having credit companies bear the burden of cancelling their charges.
