I received an automated call from "Wells Fargo" telling me I had received my new debit card recently but had not activated it.
So I stupidly called the number back to inquire.
The automated message told me to enter the number on my debit card. It would not let me proceed until I entered the number on my old card. When I did, it came back telling me, "thank you, your new card is activated".
I could not reach a representative at this number so I called the number on the back of my card, and was told that I had been scammed, WF had not sent me a new debit card. The real Wells Fargo cancelled my card on the spot and now I'll be waiting for a new one, but at least hopefully no real harm was done.
IF you get a call like this, do not call that number back, call the one on the back of your debit or credit card. Very scary stuff.
