Upon leaving the property on my own free will, I received a bill for carpet damage and cleaning fees totaling over $300. I agreed to pay the carpet damage (about $200) but not the cleaning fees because I had cleaned the apartment thoroughly.
About a year went by and I received a letter in the mail from a collection agency on behalf of Place One Apartments stating that I had to pay over $300 for damages and cleaning fees. I tried to dispute the $200 dollar amount for the carpet damage but could not find the carbon copy of my check for reference so ultimately over the span of 3 months I made payments to the collection agency so as not to have this affect my credit.
On the same day I sent out my final payment to the colleciton agency I stumbled across my carbon copy of the check I had originally written out to Place One Apartments for $200. I immediately called the collection agency and informed them of the situation. They required an actual copy of the check so I contacted my bank who mailed out the copy of my check.
I called the collection agency to get a mailing address and they informed me that Place One Apartments would have to reimburse me.
I proceeded to call Place One Apartments and spoke with Katty Miller who gave me the run around for about four months. It is at that point that I filed a small claim against Place One Apartments and the collection agency because I had still not received any money from Place One Apartments, though at this point I had received half of the amount from the collection agency, I still added them to my claim through guidance from a friend who is an attorney.
On the week before the case would be scheduled for a court date I was contacted by the collection agency and they were willing to pay Place One Apartments amount if I would drop the charges against the collection agency because it would cost them more to send an agent to represent the collection agency than the amount I was still owed from Place One Apartments.
I agreed and dropped the charges once I received the payment.
