I purchased a watch on eBay listed by this person as a vintage Rolex. I had to pay customs duty before the watch was delivered to me. This amount was based on the value of a genuine Rolex. I had the watch examined by a specialist Rolex supplier who stated that the movement was not made by Rolex.
I returned the watch and was refunded the original cost. The cost of return postage and customs duty incurred was not refunded.
Buying on eBay is based on the fact that the item is described honestly. Ebay protection only applies to the original cost and not any other costs involved. Buying from abroad necessarily incurs customs cost etc. These costs are excluded from eBay buyer protection. As these costs can be quite high and are not recoverable I believe that eBay does not look after its customers fairly when purchasing items from abroad.
SO BE WARNED - sellers on eBay can miss-describe their items which can cost you large amounts, through no fault of yours, without any come back.
