Stanford Who's Who
Was wheedled into purchasing services, never received in full, and now they keep calling me!

I purchased a "membership" from Stanford Who's Who back in July, andwas told I'd pay a one-time payment of $99.95 s&h because I workfor a non-profit organization, and would not have to pay monthly dues. Well, when I received my membership packet, not only did I only receivea certificate and a "membership" to the website (when other items weresupposed to have been included), I received a little note at the bottomof my "acceptance letter" saying I'd have to pay $9.95 "dues" everymonth! Due to this fiasco, I changed my debit card number so Stanfordcould not take money automatically out of my account... No way was Igoing to pay an extra $9.95/month for services I didn't even receive infull! Since then, for approximately the past few weeks, I have beenreceiving calls from the extension number (631) that the man who got meto sign up in the first place called from. Since I'm usually at workwhen they call, I can't take the calls, and they never leave anymessages or numbers I can call them at to tell them to leave me alone. They are calling me multiple times a day now, on both my cell line andmy home one (according to my poor fiancee, who keeps fielding the homecalls).

I am a graduate student working 3 jobs and anexternship in order to survive. The man who sold me my "membership"called me every day for a month. When I finally was able to answer hiscall, he preyed on the fact that I was proud of my accomplishments toget me to sign up... He spent about half an hour lauding me for mywonderful work and collecting information from me, then sprung on methat I needed to pay to get published. I agreed to it initially, butcalled back mere seconds later to cancel because, after hearing theexorbitant price and talking it over with my fiancee, there was no wayI could afford it. I was told that I was not allowed to cancel... Icalled my bank and found out that they had removed money from myaccount immediately, but I could get the "cheaper" membership... Which Ishould have been offered anyway, according to him, due to my working ata non-profit organization! As well, I was told it'd be a one-timepayment with no membership dues... Then it was sprung on me later onthat I'd still need to pay them! I've experienced nothing but back-talkand twisted words from Stanford's representatives.

I havee-mailed the company to ask them to cease and desist from calling me. Ihave told them that, if they do not stop, I will be filing a formalcomplaint against them. I will keep everyone posted as to how it goes.
