1&1 internet makes if very easy to register domains, but once you try to cancel anything they give you a major runaround.
I wanted to cancel the auto-renewal feature on my domains because I decided I didn't want some of them anymore. I couldn't even find how to do this through their control panel, so I searched their faqs until I found one that said I needed to go to http://cancel. 1and1.com and login separately there.
I went to that url and logged in. They have a very confusing process that requires you to click on "cancel entire package", even if you just want to disable auto-renewal, and even if you only want to change a few domains within the package.
I followed the confusing instructions and received and email that I needed to confirm the request. I did so. The next week, I received an invoice for 4 of my domains that were close to expiring. I called 1and1 billing support and told them I did not want to renew those domains.
The lady on the phone was unhelpful. She kept referring me to the cancellation website and proceeded to tell me how to cancel a domain auto-renewal. I told her I had already done that and I eventually hung up on her because she was obviously not going to be of any help.
I then emailed their support people and explained the situation. I told them I absolutely did not want to pay that invoice and did not want the domains renewed. This was 1 or 2 days before the invoice was due.
The next day I received an email saying that I had to follow the instructions in my previous email (which I had). The next day the invoice went through and those four domains were automatically renewed.
As far as I can tell, 1and1 actively thwarts customers from cancelling domains and services and trains their people to make it as difficult as possible to cancel, then bill them anyway not having followed the correct process.
