I was ripped off by Quark on their upgrade deal.
I first bought Quark Xpress in late 1986 when I got my fist Mac to publish a book I was editing, even though it was way overpriced for the time. And since then I've paid as much to upgrade a couple times.
Last summer I kept getting emails from Quark about version 8 coming out soon, but saying that if I upgraded to version 7 now I would get a free upgrade to 8. I was hoping to work on some books again sometime soon so thought I should get 8. Finally after all the emails I figured I might as well go ahead and pay for 7 as long as I was going to get 8 for the same deal anyway.
When 7 came there was no info on the upgrade and I got no other emails telling what to do, and nothing saying I had to do it soon. So I thought whenever I'm ready for it I should be able to get it, after all they were an honest company, so I thought.
Now recently I finally had time to install 7 and when I called to register it, since their site didn't work, I asked about the upgrade. The person told me that was no good anymore and I could pay another 300.00 to get version 8. So much for the free upgrade to 8.
To me this is fraud. They never told me I had to do it by a certain date, they just wanted to get 300.00 twice. I highly recommend everyone avoid Quark, they can't be trusted. Boycott dishonest fraudulent companies.
