We had Z-Tel as our long distance provider. Later we added online services (modem dial up for 19.95/month).
Z-Tel billed us over eight-hundred dollars in online charges in just one month!!!
Upon confronting them with the excessive charges we were told that online access via dialup modem was billed by the minute and we should not have left our computer logged on after surfing the Net. Needless to say we were shocked. We had no idea that the we were on the clock and charged by the minute. Needless to say, we felt the charges were bogus, and to say the least unreasonable as we NEVER were billed by the minute for being online.
We disputed the charges and closed the account completely. We also refused to pay these bogus charges.
Z-Tel reported the account to the credit bureau as unpaid. This was years ago. To our surprise Z-Tel just re-reported us. The charges appear on my credit report as of 2006—still unpaid.
Go to hell, Z-Tel (oh, yes, they changed their name. On January 1, Z-Tel officially became known as Trinsic).
