I received an email from Outstanding Student Honor Society around May. The email claimed I had been nominated by someone at the University of Minnesota (my school).
However, there were clues that OSHS was a scam. My actual GPA did not warrant the "Highest Honor" award given by OSHS. I was also suspicious that the nominator was kept anonymous from me.
I paid the $32 and accessed the website. The website appeared more or less legitimate at the time and was functional. However, today in January the website cannot be found at all.By paying the fee, I was paying for lifetime membership (or so the OSHS said).
After reading complaints on other websites, including some from entire colleges, and based on the non-existence of the website, I must conclude that the Outstanding Student Honor Society was and is a scam and ripoff.
I have never received any benefit from membership, and I implore anyone who reads this to be very wary of any unsolicited emails from honor societies. Now that I have finished law school, perhaps I will pursue getting $32 back for me (and everyone who paid in).
