Ripoff Sold me something missing parts and wouldn't make it right

On Thanksgiving week I bought a computer from Circut City for a Christmas present for my 12 year old. It was advertised in their sale flyer for 349.99 after rebates. It was a compaq and was advertised to have a dvd/cd player and burner in it. They told me they didn't have any in stock so they had to order it and it would take at least 2 weeks for it to come in.

Three weeks later my husband picked it up and we wrapped it up for Christmas. Christmas Day we set it up for my daughter and started to "explore" the burner. We realized that it had NO burner in it. We called Compaq and they said that all Compaq-that model - were equipped with burners because that is the only backup system on the computer. They suggested I call the store I bought it from because the only way they could fix it was to send the computer back to them for several weeks or have me fix it myself (I am not a computer expert).

On December 26th I called the store I bought it at and they said that they didn't have the same model because it had been discontinued. They said that the only thing they could do for me was to put the money on a gift card and then resell a more expensive computer to me. It ended up costing me almost $100.00 more.

The next day on Monday, December 27th, I called the Corporate Offices. After over an hour of being on the phone with them the only information I got out of them was that their return policy states that I would have to pay a 15% restocking fee if they gave me my money back. I explained to them that I never received my FULL item and they told me that it didn't matter. I had to either buy a better, more expensive computer or take a $90.00 loss for the restocking fee.

What do I tell my 12 year old? So I was forced to buy a new computer at Circut City because they would only give me instore credit and then I was forced to pay almost $100.00 for the computer because they didn't have the same model. My only other choice would be to give them almost $100.00 for their mistake (their so called restocking fee) and go home with nothing. Needless to say I am furious.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I don't think I should take a $100.00 loss for their mistake.
