AmMed Direct - Better Care
Company encourages sales reps to switch customers to dangerouly cheap meters to boost profit margins

I am a former employee of AmMed Direct in Antioch, TN. First of all, I'd like to make it known that as a sales rep at AmMed, you are encouraged to switch the diabetic customer on the phone from their current blood sugar testing meter to what AmMed Direct refers to as a "value meter". These cheap meters are actually the Glucolab Infopia, Surecheck, and they may have found other ones to send out since my departure. These meters are dangerously cheap.
For example, one of my team leads at AmMed informed me that they keep a log of customer complaints pertaining to these meters.in this log there is a report of a diabetic woman who was using a Glucolab Infopia meter and the meter was reading her blood sugar as normal, when actually her sugar was sky high. She ended up going to the ER and almost died. This is not uncommon with these cheap meters and management is fully aware of all these incidents, yet we are encouraged to sell them as "one of the best meters on the market", even if the customer already has a genuinely good meter like the One Touch Ultra. There is a MUCH larger profit to be made from these cheap testing meters and cheap supplies versus the alternative. This is probably why Tom is making over a million dollars a year for himself, but doing so at the cost of these poor, sick people's lives.
I've also had customers crying to me on the phone that their prescriptions hadn't arrived, (and these are meds they need to take to survive) and they couldn't get them filled elsewhere locally since the meds had already been processed through our computer system.
I, like others here, am also dissatisfied with the way the pay scale and commission deteriorated over the years, but I feel worse for the way that the customers have been treated and misled. I wonder also how many people have actually died as a result of not getting their med on time, or at all... Or have died because AmMed sold them a cheap testing meter that they knew had a high probability of giving an incorrect reading.
