I had 48 hours to renew my insurance through COBRA when I started to look for a new company to cover me, my sick wife, and my "special needs" 12yr old daughter.
Real Benefits was one of the 50 companies that contacted me after submitting for a quote online.
I was assured that everything would be fully covered as normal. They even insisted that I give them a list of my doctors with phone numbers so they can verify the coverage. I was told that my coverage would take care of everything except for my $20 copay for doctor visits and $15 for prescriptions. Hospitals would also be covered the same way as I was covered by Aetna through Cobra.
I was pressured to pay over $700 immediately by phone in order to get insured by 12/15. They also outright told me that it would be in my families best interest to take their policy and forget about cobra. I could use the savings for other things.
December 17th I had an appointment with a specialist (who was in the list I gave them) for a procedure, and checkup. I gave them my new insurance card and 10 minutes later they called me into the administrative office. I was informed of the actual coverage... According to my plan, my family is allowed a total of 5 doctor visits, 1 checkup visit, and no specialists per year. Real Benefits would cover a total of $100 per visit and that's it.
So, for almost $700 per month (or $8,400 per year), they would cover $600 per year.
I demanded a full 0 refund including processing and everything else.
At first they argued, but once I mentioned that I live in New York they gave up the fight and agreed to a full reimbursement.
I am supposed to wait another week to see it in my bank account.
