Always I have been haunted by my experience working at Rutgers Mental Health Center's adolescent unit, which now is part of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. It was worst job I ever had and did much damage to the teenagers who were there.
The teenagers they were used as guinea pigs. Psychology students, amateurs they were, were allowed access to them and to analyze them. Many times the students were fanatics. It was very bad for the teenagers. No teen who is troubled needs a fanatic to deal with.
Also there was a law less aspect to the unit. The older teens were allowed to threaten and to bully the younger. Nothing ever was done about it. Staff was told we should let the teens express themselves, but some were not expressing they were threatening the others. Very bad.
Also the admission. Rutgers tried to get as many teens into the program as they could. Many were not sick with a psychiatric illness even. It was about getting the money, always with Rutgers the money.
I want to say parents do not put your sons and daughters in this unit. Whatever problems they may be having do not send them there.
