While being on permanant dissibility for 6 months in Florida, my wife saw my health declining. We decided to go back home to Illinois. I was recieving $1,680.30 a month from Unum insurance and $1650.00 through Social Security. At that time we thought we could afford a modest small house in Illinois. Before we moved there we bought a small house.
We were in the house for a year when on March 6th. We recieved a letter from Unum stating that they overpaid us by $25,449.02, please remitt your check to us by April 1st. Or futher action will be taken. They explained it to us saying that the overpayment was because they were to pay me 176.00 over Social Securitys $1650.00. I told them when i applied for permanant dissibility with their company i did check the box saying i was on S.S. Which they sent me my application so i could see the box, that was checked. They said sorry we missed it, now you must pay us back.
Well to our shock we were devistated and numb because on our $1650.00 we were in big trouble. Within 2 days we had sold our little house, had to give away our best friend, Buddy our little dog. Find an appartment to live at, had to use our credit card to eat, maxed them out. After all this accured i filed a complaint with the ILLINOIS DEPT. OF INSURANCE.in the meantime we filed for bankruptsy. After we filed the Illinois dept of insurance called me and said they got Unum to cancel the $25449.02 bill they sent us and they will be sending me a check for $176.00 a month till age 65.
Lots of good that was going to do us, now we have a bankruptsy and no house no dog and my poor wife is working p. T and she is in bad health too with no insurance. I ended up an award of the state and being catagoried indagent. Unum would of done a better job on us if they would of just killed us. Sorry but im stil VERY bitter. Talked to some lawyers and they dont want to go after insurance companies. I guess they lost their spines. What ever you do, check out your insurance companies. Even the largest truck mfg.in the world doesnt care about their employees wellfare after they are sick. Oh, by the way. My surgeries was for a kidney transplant and a hip replacement, and a stint in my heart. My son was the kidney donner.
