Verizon Wireless
Claimed instant updates on website. Billed extra over 30 days after

Though the COMPANY claims to provide instant and updated online "access" to my account, they failed to provide this to our family. After my wife and kids spent 20 days in Mexico on vacation, I got a bill from Verizon for roughly $980 more than normal, though I consistently checked our bill status on their site.
When I called about the bill, they said that they CAN'T ANTICIPATE what other billing factions like those in Mexico might charge. They said they had to wait to get the bill before charging it to me. Am I in a better position than Verizon to make a guess as to what other foreign entities might charge for an international phone call? (This is from Texas to Northern Mexico, which is actually closer than calling most cities in bordering states — which would've been free, according to the plan.)
Verizon should've given us SOME indication of what the charge would be before it just popped up on our bill. We paid the bill (of over $1,100 for one month on two phone lines) in an effort to keep our credit clean. However, when the next month's bill showed up at over $700, we decided to change companies and plans, and to leave "poor ol' Verizon" in our tracks, despite what it might do to our credit rating.
We've since switched to a company that won't allow calls or other services that aren't in the pre-arranged plan. It's a small company that doesn't have or claim to have the coverage that Verizon does. But we always know what to expect, and that means everything to us now. And we don't drop calls anymore - like we consistently did with Verizon (despite their commercials).
Be careful of Verizon sneaking up on you like they did on us. They're relentless. Don't trust the so-called "plan" they've set you up on, especially if you need to operate outside the plan. The rates are insane. Our bill for December '08 should've been around $140 but it was over $1,100, then they said we owed them over $700 for February. We spoke with their customer service dept many times but they weren't willing to work with us.
You can't really sue somebody for $1,800.00 even if you can prove that they've done you wrong, because it costs more in legal fees than you stand to win. THIS IS ALL I CAN DO: Take my advice and don't get ripped off like we did. I can't endorse any of the others in particular, but none are as bad as Verizon, in my experienced opinion. Best Wishes.
