DVD records dead after one year!

I bought 2 Philips DVDR 985 DVD recorders at a cost of $700.00 bucks each. Both died after twelve months and Philips claims, to poor... From warranty. Both models do the identical point. A signal looks about the LCD and also the machines lockup. Despite unplugging them-and inserting them in the signal remains their and also the models are ineffective.
