They tried to get me too! I had the same situation. I bought a 32" t.V. From HH Gregg with the 1 yr no finance charges and 5 yr warranty. My year is up in August so in early July I sent my regular monthly payment on the 5th and it was due on the 12th. Please keep in mind I have NEVER had a late payment.

Then, the following weekend I sent another check for the entire amount to pay it off. Well, later in the month I received another statement stating that I had a $25 late fee for a late payment, but that I also had a credit balance of $25 for over payment! I called immediately. The automated system asked if I would like my $25 credit to be refunded and I did the yes option to have it mailed to me.

Then I spoke to a representative to advise her my payment had been sent in plenty of time, and that there was no way it could have been late. She began to argue with me, and told me she had no way of knowing I was telling the truth. I offered to fax her a copy of the check. She said that still didn't prove anything because I may have left it sit on my desk or under my visor for a few days. She said she would refund half.

I told her that wasn't good enough because there was no way it could have been late. She told me since 09/11/01 all mail has been running late. I advised her this is the first instance I have ever had anything arrive late due to the mail. She then said she has offered me half and I could take it or leave it. I told her I would take it for now, but I wasn't going to give up on the other half.

She had stated that they received my check on 07/17/02, so I called my bank to verify when my check was processed. It went through my bank 07/15!! She had to have been lying!

I called back and ask to speak to a supervisor. The gentleman was very nice, and did acknowledge I had never had a late payment. He stated he would send be a refund of $25. I asked him if it would be a total of $50 because I already over paid $25 and with the $25 late fee it would be $50. He said it would be $50.

About a week later I received a check in the amount of $25. I called the company back, and the automated system stated I had a credit balance of $29.50 and once again I opted to have the credit mailed to me. At this point I am still waiting for the check, but I expect to get it in the next day or two. I called the automated system again today and it said I have a zero balance, so I assume the check is in the mail. If it isn't they will be hearing from me again!

I think I was lucky I started my whole process early. If I hadn't I probably would have been stuck just like everybody else.
