I began my educational experience with the Ohio Center for Broadcasting on January 19th. after 4 years of pondering which school I would attend and settling on a career field, I chose OCB... Regretfully.
I should have known that this school was not good the first time I walked in the door. It looked seriously underfunded although the opposite is true, here are a few things I noticed. 1: The walls were bare, plain white. 2: They clearly did not have enough equipment, only a handfull of video editing stations. 3: They gave us handouts that had been photocopied from a textbook, most likely the only one in the school. Also I got the impression that they had not purchased insurance for their handheld cameras due to their strict sign out restrictions.
I got the impression that because of their shoddy, touch and go teaching style and lack of equipment, they spent a bulk of their money on guest speakers that they paraded around the school. Needless to say alot of the students in the class were very unhappy with the direction we were going. Within the first month our class shrunk from about 30 to 20.
The teacher assistant and main instructor were always going to New York and other places for business, in hindsight that all may have been an act. They kept telling us not to burn bridges.
My major problem with this school is the unbelievably unprofessional and rude behavior of one of the admin. They employ. Here's what happened.
About 5 weeks in we got our first video project, each of us was to write, shoot, produce, direct and edit 2,30 second commercials for ficticious products or services. They gave us 5 days and 5 cameras to shoot a total of 40 commercials. Because of the strict camera sign out policy (cant sign out on the weekend and on the weekdays have to have them back by 10pm.) Also they had to be signed out 2 days in advance! If you wanted to take them off campus.
One day they told me of the restrictions after I had writen and cast both of my commercials, they were to be shot at my house at 10:30pm, of course that was not possible, they insisted that we were told about that on the first day, i replied that they could have restated it when we transitioned from radio to T.V.
Anyway, after I learned that both of my commercials were dead, the class emptied and the other students began to frantically work on their own projects on campus, there was nothing on the write bored and no outline for the day, and there were only me and two others in the class, so I signed out and left, in disgust. I felt as though I was wasting my time.
Soon after I left I was called by one of the admin. Lets call him JD, he proceded to condesend to me and tell me that if was working for him, he would have fired me and that I was immature. He told me he wanted to see me before the next class started.
Our entire transaction that day was about 40 seconds. He asked me if I was feeling better about things. I said "no not really" (Im using quotation marks for legal reasons) I proceded to tell him that their expectations of us, given the restrictions we were handed were "unrealistic", he said "every other class was able to do it" and i replied "good for them" keep in mind that this was a calm conversation, I wouldn't be bated in to yelling or losing my cool.
What happened next was shocking and kind of funny. He said "go home, I dont want you in my school, I'm exspelling you" I grabbed my bag and stood up, he continued " you will never work in this business with that attitude" to which I said "thats fine" and I left.
Later that day i received a call from the main admin. Stating that he had not exspelled me, but that I was on the road to being exspelled, even this to me was assinine, I calmly bring a concern to managment and they say im being insubourdanent, that is rediculas. Besides I knew she was lying because she knew that he had broken the law by exspelling me. I later received a letter from the school stating that I was not exspelled.in any case, if they want me back or not, I dont want them back.in my opinion it is a cracker jack school full of crooks and wannabe students being tricked out of thousands.
Iam currently seeking legal representation because I do not feel that I should have to pay for that pitiful experience.
