Portfolio Recovery had left several messages on our answering service while we were in a hospice situation with my dad. Upon his passing, I returned their call and spoke with Ms. Grey. She very aggressively informed me of a debt that we owed, and she needed some type of payment.
I was stunned and confused not understandingwho she was or what company she was representing. She then started with humiliation tactics stating"oh come on now, how can you owe this much money and not know it?" "Rebecca told us..." I said "Rebecca?..." " You have spoken with our daughter about this?" she stated "I certainly have... You didn't answer my messages." I said "We have been working with hospice to take care of my dying dad... I'm returning your call now. He passed away last Friday." She stated " We have a list of all of your family members and will continue to go down this list unless you agree to work something out." I stated " I don't know who you are, or what you are talking about. You need to give me some information about your company and yourself."
She stated " We can play hard-ball if you want to play hard-ball, we have an extensive legal department. Now, I can set up some payments if you need some time, but I need to get your bank account number and routing number." I stated " I'm not giving you any information." She aggressively read off some type of rehearsed legal junk, and hung up.
I called them back to ask them for some information about themselves. Noninvasive. Full name, address (not the P.O. Box) zip code, and Ms. Grey's extention# (45123). I was treated very politely by the receptionist until she realized I was not needing the information to mail them a payment. She then spouted "We operate inside the FDC manual, you can look it up on the internet." Then she hung up on me.
