Assetcare Inc. And/or InoVision, A NCOP Company, LLC Assetcare, Inc. And InoVision trying to collect on cancelled debts

On September 28, I received a letter in the mail from Assetcare, Inc. Telling me that they were collecting a debt for the creditor, InoVision, A NCOP Company, LLC, on what I will call a "standard form letter." The letter appears legitimate, and in fine print (which I almost missed) gave me the original reporting creditor, which is a utility company from a state I haven't lived in for 10 years.

I called the phone number listed on the letter to ask them to provide proof of service and debt. When I was connected to a representative and explained that I was disputing this debt, the representative began to talk over the top of me, in a raised voice, trying to tell me that this was a valid debt, she knew so because she had a date of service.

I tried to explain to her that unless she can provide proof of an account and service with the original creditor, I wouldn't accept responsibility for it. The representative continued to talk over the top of me in increasing volumes, and when I had to raise the volume of my voice to be heard over her (as she wasn't going to let me get a word in edgewise) she accused me of being nasty with her and hung up on me.

I had to call back then, and the same representative answered my call the 2nd time, and when she realized it was me, she put me back in the waiting cue. After 20 minutes and no answer, I had to call back again, and got another female representative which sounded suspiciously like the first, but she assured me she wasn't. I was then told that the former representative closed out the account based on, "disputed due to not living in that state."

They may or may not have closed the account, but I find it strange that a debt that old for as little money as it was (less than $150.00), which didn't show up on any of the big 3 reporting agencies, would suddenly appear for collection now. It makes me think that someone down the pipe has either dug up some old accounts and are trying to fraudulently collect on them, or that it's a case of mistaken identity. Either way, these companies bear watching.
