A man by the name of Lee Smith came to my door this evening around 7:40 and said that he was fundraising for money to donate to Tuscan Readers Services, which would donate books to Children's Mercy Hospital. We gave him a check for $40 and thought we were doing a good thing; after he left, we checked the "tax-deductable" receipt and it said nothing about being tax-deductable.
This tipped us off that it might be a scam because the form he had showed us previously was different, so we checked online and the first result was that it was a scam! We quickly found the salesman and got our check back, but we just wanted to let people know that this can happen to kind-hearted people.
Please be careful with salesmen; if you donate to organizations, pay in checks because you will not get your money back if you pay in cash, and you can always cancel a check. However, if you pay with a check, please remember that your full name and check account # are on it, scammers can find out personal information with these little bits of info. Be careful!
