Rebecca, of North Carolina. Part of your problem lies in the state laws. A lot of the activity that has been discussed here is in Texas, a "debtors" state. The laws of NC are different in these matters. Make sure, you check all the consequences before you do anything, in any state. The only reason all that happened, was the NC laws. Colleen lives here in TX, as I do. I have recently been contacted by one of the Sam Streeter 4th party debt collectors, gave his "Business Name" as, Bryan, a legal assistant. Means he's legally an assistant. Be ware of the phony euphamisms. Main thing, never admit the debt, ask for all validation, in writing. Never make any payments on the debt unless you get a letter from them first, stating this is a lump sum payment settling the referenced debt. Also be aware that they can use the difference you pay and the original amount as a default income to you, and file that as miscellaneous income for your next years IRS statement. An extra 2 or 3 thousand dollars income that you have to pay taxes on.
