I was contacted on 7/18/05 at 6:30pm on my cell phone by a man with a very storng accent. He stated that he was from the American Grant Information Center and that I was qualified to get between $5000 and $25000 in grants.
He went to say that good tax paying citizens were eligable for this grant. He explained to me that once I answer a few simple questions, he will mail me information to fill out. Once I returned it the "grant" money would then be either transferred to my bank via a wire transer or be mailed in the form of a check, which ever I preffered.
He asked me if I paid my taxes on time and I stated "yes". He then proceded to have me verify my home address, which I did and my "finanical instution's name". I then become was very suspicous of giving the name of bank.
I asked why he needed the name of bank and he proceded to stated he wanted to verify if it was a nationaly recongized bank. I told him it was, and he insisited that I tell him the name of it. I then hung-up knowing that it was a scam.
I this helps even just one person from being scammed.
