To all Consumers (apartment renters)
This is the true experience of ours. Unexaggerated, and unedited. It is vital that everyone know the truth before they decide to rent from Holland Residential LLC. These people are racists towards people of ethnic minorities and have treated us horribly since we moved into their establishment City Place Apartments in Pasadena CA. Here is our story for all the world to know! We have just recently filed our complaints with the Department of Housing and Urban Development as it relates to Fair Housing Discrimination.
We feel we have been violated because our race.in response to our filed complaint with Fair Housing department, we have received a threat from the attorneys office Kimball, Tirey, St. John as a scare tactic to intimidate us from exposing these people.
We are going to continue to tell the truth to anyone who will listen. We will have justice.
Part 1
Dear Ms. Gilbreath Ms. Gates, (Mr. Daniels)
First, my husband and I would like to thank you and Ms. Gates for taking the time to meet with me yesterday. We appreciate your professionalism, and courteousness in addressing our several issues. We are glad that this has all been resolved in a fair and just manner. We would just like to clarify that we were indeed reluctant to pay the additional deposit due to the lack of service we have received since moving here nearly two months ago. Up until our phone conversation, and meeting yesterday, my husband and I were ready to walk away from City Place, and retain our own legal representation, because we felt that our civil rights had indeed been violated. I am sure both parties will agree that it is better to settle our problems, rather to have it escalate to a full blown legal battle. Now that everything has been rectified, we feel that we can enjoy the duration of our lease term, and be treated with honor, respect, and professionalism by all members of the Holland Residential staff from this day forward.
(Needless to say things only got worse after this)
Secondly, we would like to request apologies from both Holly and Shandy for the disrespectful, and abrasive manner in which they treated us. I personally feel that is the least they can do, after all we have had to endure on their account. I would also like to bring it to everyone's attention that before Shandy threatened to throw me out of the office, and call the police on me, she feigned ignorance when I asked for Mr. Daniels phone number, pretending she had no idea who he was. She gave me Ms. Gilbreath's phone number instead. I just found it astonishing that she would not even know who Mr. Daniels is, seeing that she is an employee of Holland Residential. I am aware of the staff meeting this coming Friday, and I would like to be there if permitted. I feel that Shandy and Holly can say anything in their defence to excuse their behavior. Let it be known that all our our complaints were indeed true, accurate, and justified to the best of our knowledge. Neither, I nor my husband has exaggerated, or lied about the experiences we have had since moving here. Nor do we have any reason to do so.
Lastly, we would like to know if it is your intention to retain our excessive deposit for the duration of our lease term. We are aware that due to the appearance of our credit reports, (as inaccurate as they are) we were required to pay an extra $2050 over and above the normal deposit for aone bedroom. We would like to request, if it is at all possible, to have at least half of our deposit refunded after we have proved over a period of time that we do indeed pay rent on time. We feel it is reasonable that after paying our rent on time for at least seven months, we should receive a portion of that excessive deposit back. We are good, responsibletenants, who have paid rent on time for more than 12 months previously. We feel we should not have to be punished continually for what is on our credit reports. Please let us know right away if you will grant our request.

Dear Mr. Daniels,
I would appreciate if you would please call or email me directly. I have received insufficient help from your staff.
I spoke with Ms. Gilbreath Sunday April 3rd. She said she would handle my concern regarding Shandi and call me back. Now, today is Tuesday the 5th, and she has still not kept her word. This has happened to me several times now. Rachel Gates has also said she would take care of an issue I had regarding my bathroom fan, and nothing was done for two weeks. Then I had to personally appear in her office and debate with her. Then she finally made good on what she said she would do.
Here is the main problem that I have. On Saturday April 2nd, I was in the fitness room minding my own business. Another resident enters, (whom I had just met in the business center the previous day) and asks me "why I have 'beef' with Shandi. She said that you wanted to beat her up, and that you did not like her very much." She also had told this resident that I was married. (I had already told him that Friday April 1st)
You can imagine that I was astounded. Shandi has absolutely no right to speak about me to other residents period! She has no right to tell this resident my marital status, or to spread vicious lies and rumors about me. She has slandered my name, and defamed my character. She had violated my civil rights, and has now stooped so low as to violate my privacy and confidentiality as a resident. I complained about this to Ms. Gilbreath April 3rd, and she told me that she did not believe me. Ms. Gilbreath alluded that this was somehow my fault. She told me that Shandi "was not going anywhere". Then she preceded to tell me that I could just get out my lease and move if I wanted to. Ms. Gilbreath claims that she handled this Shandi situation last month. As you recall, Shandi had threatend to call the police on me if I did not get out of her office in five minutes. This incident happened within two weeks after I moved here. I was in the office to complain that my clothes dryer was inoperable. I had not been able to dry laundry for six days. I had been promised repeatedly that it would get fixed for several days, and nothing had been done. The same day, prior to the police threat she said that I could just move out. She also was very crass with me, and told me that "you and your husband need to get on the same page".
I do not feel that this problem has been addressed properly, objectively, justly, or professionally. Ms. Gilbreath said on March 1st that she would walk with me down to the office and make sure that I was treated with respect. She said that she would meet with all the people in the office at City Place in regards to how I have been mistreated. I have no knowledge that this meeting ever took place, because Ms. Gilbreath forbade me to be in attendance. I did not think this was fair, since my whole situation was the main topic. She denied my request to be in attendance.
Please be reminded that my husband and I moved in January 8th! Not one person on staff in that rental office came to personally and physically walk my apartment, and address the excessive number of items needing repair... Until MARCH 1st! They were all listed on the move in inspection sheet, with the exception of my bathroom fan. This fan was filthy, but it did work. It finally got cleaned by Frank nearly twelve days after I had first complained, and was assured by Ms. Gates that she would see to it that it was cleaned. When I debated with Ms. Gates in order to get her to keep her word to me. She said that the work order had been placed, but they were not going to clean it, because Maria said that they don't personal cleaning and that I had already been living there and that it was not noted on the inspection form. I had to wait almost two weeks just to hear that. No one could call my cell phone and tell me that sooner. They just ignore my request completely until I have to appear in the office in person. Of course my bathroom fan had never been cleaned since the last resident moved out, and the same is true of my fireplace. My fireplace is water damaged, and had several tiny holes where the metal has rusted and deteriorated. Frank looked at it and cleaned itthe day he cleaned my fan, and said he had to order something to fix the holes. Then I got nothing for the next two weeks.
April 3rd, Ms. Gilbreath went on and on about the extensive water damage throughout the entire property. I really do not care about the water damage. I just would have appreciated if someone could call my cell phone and let me know I was on the list to be repaired and that everything was being done as fast as possible, thank you for your patience etc. The fact that my service requests go ignored for long periods of time is just rude and inconsiderate.
The bottom line is that I have been told that someone would call me, or do something, and then they do not keep their word. I sent an email on March 17th and was told no one ever received it. I printed it out and put it on Ms. Gates' desk with a note asking for a response. I got no answer, no acknowledgement whatsoever. I asked in this email about my deposit, and that I receive an apology from Shandi and Holly for the waythey had made my time here horrible. I brought this up again on April 3rd, and Ms. Gilbreath said that an apology was unnecessary. Ms. Gates had told me the week prior that she gave a copy of the email to Ms. Gilbreath and that she would be calling me. Of course she never did. I had to call her April 3rd to complain about the latest Shandi fiasco. The conversation did not go well. Ms. Gilbreath made it sound like it was some inconvenience for her to take the time to walk my apartment. For the third time since I moved here I have been told to just move. She claimed she would call the office as soon as it opened April 3rd and ask Shandi about what she had told this other resident about me. Ms. Glibreath gave me the impression that she had no intention of calling this other resident to verify this greivance. Ms. Gilbreath claimed she would reprimand Shandi if she did spread lies and personal information about me to this other resident. I doubt she ever did anything besides take Shandi's side and cover up for her.
I have done everything right. I have avoided that office like the plague, avoided even speaking to Shandi. We pay rent on time, but yet we still get unfair serivce. Then I have to hear from a resident I barely know, that Shandi is saying maliciousand false things about me!!! What have I done to deserve this persecution? She is violating your own company policies, and is still permitted to get away with it? Then I am getting blamed for this!? Why is this happening to me? Is it because your company enjoys tormenting people of color!? It is not my fault that I moved here and my apartment was in horrendous condition! It is not my fault that no one took their job seriously enough to do a pre move in inspection. 99% of the issues I had to endure could have been avoided had someone done their job. How much more abuse and slander from Shandi am I supposed to take!!? Why is NOTHING being done on my behalf?!! The whole staff smiles in my face, and makes false promises, put on a great fascade in front of Ms. Gilbreath, but then do not keep their word, and just ignore my legitimate concerns. I feel I am owed an apology.
I need to hear from Mr. Daniels in regards to all these matters. Especially this whole thing about Shandi being permitted to continue to violate my civil rights, and privacy. Apparently the rest of his staff is unwilling, or incapable, or both of properly dealing with this urgent matter.

Holland Residential Staff!
I am going to rebut every point you made because you are incorrect and mistaken.
1. The security deposit being refunded is not the real issue. The point is that I emailed you and asked you on March 2nd originally. Then I heard nothing so on March 17th I resent it, and found no one had received. But, I feel you are lying because the email was not bounced back to me through hotmail as being undeliverable. The point is that I had to wait an entire month before I got any response! That is highly unprofessional. Especially since I was told on March 18th that Ms. Gilbreath would call me, and she never did. Why am not surprised!?
2. This resident Jay-sean (however his name is spelled), already was told that I was married. I told him myself the first day I met him on April 1st. Shandy has no business whatsoever telling any resident anything about me... EVER! My name should not ever be formed upon her lips for any reason.
3. I see you conveniently left out the part that Shandy told Jay-sean that I wanted to beat her up! This just proves that no one on staff spoke to this Jay-sean person directly! You people cover up for Shandy's blatant and purposefully violating company policy and my civil rights, as well as my privacy! You take this woman's sideand believe her lies just because she is white and I am not?! Where is the justice?!! Ms. Gilbreath said that Shandy would be "in trouble" and that she would get "reprimanded"! Now you tell me you only counseled her? What is that about? She is permitted to still slander my name anytime she feels like it, without any repercussion and without consequence?!! This is unjust! I demand a personal apology in writing from Shandy immediately! She owes it to me. If a black employee did this to a white resident, would they not have been fired on the spot?!! Would they not have been terminated after threatening to throw a white resident out of the office and call the police?!!
4. Your "feeling that there is a constant tension between myself and the office, namely Shandy" is incorrect! I have done nothing to deserve this treatment! I have done nothing to deserve being gossiped about or disrespected! After that woman had the audacity to threaten me, I have avoided her like the plague. I do not even bother dealing with her at all. I have stayed out of that office at all costs, especially if she is the only one working there. Then I have to hear from another resident that I barely even know that Shandy is spreading vicious lies about me! I have stayed out of her way, and this is the thanks I get! She is the one out of control! She is the one who is out of line! I do not care what "everyone likes about her". Those people's experience has nothing to do with the treatment I have received! Matter of fact what anyone else thinks about her is entirely irrelevant! She has been rude, unhelpful, crass, and disrespectful to me since day one. This whole process of moving here was horrible from the beginning! Then you think she did me some sort of favor out the kindness of her heart by staying later the day we moved here?!!! It is her job to be here when I moved in! I had to come all the way in the pouring rain over 100 miles in traffic to be here! She was obligated to stay and wait as long as it took! If she was not so erroneous in her conduct and screwed up our move in date, then maybe I could saved the equivlant to one day's rent! Where is my refund!? She claimed she sat around and waited all day the previous day for us to show up! If that was the case, you would think that she would have had time to get off her duff and do a pre-move in inspection! Then I would not have had to go through all these atrocities! I would have not had to endure such horrendous service, only to have all the blame put on Arturo! Never has she got off her behind and did a walk through after we moved here! Then she gave Arturo my original move in inspection sheet, and had it not been for me having my own copy I would have been screwed over and charged for everything wrong with that apartment! If Shandy had done her job right the first time, instead of telling me she "doesn't know", or some other dumb excuse, none of this would be happening. But I am sure she gets off her duff when white residents move in?!!! She probably goes above and beyond the call of duty for white people, but treats black people like trash!
5. Yes the rust stains too numerous to count were indeed on the inside of the fireplace behind the glass! It was on two thirds of the "ash bin" walls. On April 5th Frank came and sanded the areas and spray painted them. I do not know what kind of paint he used. I hope it was not toxic, flammable, or explosive! In the process of sanding, my carpet is now ruined in the area immediately surrounding the fireplace. I tried to vacuum up the dust, but the carpet is still stained a dark grey color. I want it professionally cleaned this week!
6. I do not really care about the leaks or water damage. Now that it took a whole month for Ms. Gilbreath to confirm that I was on some sort of list, and that it would be fixed. That is fine with me, as long as I am not blamed or charged for any water damage. I do not know if I have extensive damage caused by a leak. I had a brown stain at the base of the fireplace which Mike repainted March 4th.
7. I really do not care about any sheetrock or anything else. If I have damage then it will be fixed eventually. I would just appreciate being kept in the loop on the status that concerns my apartment! I do not like waiting a whole month to get a response from you people!
Moving out is not going to solve anything. You are not going to run off the property! I will not give you people the satisfaction. I am sure you would want nothing more than for me to leave quietly! I feel the business you run has not been professional towards me at all. Ms. Gilbreath are you and your staff not obligated to be at the very least cordial to me during the walk of my apartment on March 1st!?? Is it not your job to do so? Then why do you expect me to sing your praise just because you people finally came out of that office to address my numerous complaints!?? Why did you not drag Shandy along too, since this is all her fault because she is purely negligent of her duties! I feel that I have never gotten proper service since I moved here. It is really appalling to me that is by far the worst management company I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with in my entire life! There had better not be another Shandy incident either! I am tired of her constantly violating my rights, and I am filing a complaint with the department of fair housing! Now how would you like it if I broadcasted all that I have experienced here with all the rest of the residents!?? Are you only going to counsel me too? Would I be unjustified in doing so, since Shandy is allowed to do the same to me?!!
