I am writing on behalf of my son who is disabled and a student at ITT Tech in Getzville, NY. He is withdrawing as of March 4 due to failing too many classes.
Before anyone decides to start slamming us, I want to point out that he has learning disabilities as a result of a Traumatic Brain Injury and has difficulty with writing, therefore I am helping him file this report.
The reasons my son began attending ITT involved not only pressure from their recruiters, but also his desire to earn a degree that promised to lead to a well paying career. A career that would support his medical needs that run into the hundreds of thousands.
The Master Representative basically told me to stay out of the way and she would take care of all of his educational needs including special tutoring, one on one instruction from teachers when needed, extra time for testing, etc. All of those things are supposed to be available to him by law as a disabled student.
Also, promised carpooling for my son, including any extra transportation he needed in order to be able to stay after class for tutoring, (which is included in tuition costs), was never provided. He found a classmate who helped him get to and from school, but couldn't hang around for the extra time he needed.
Not only did transportation mysteriously fall apart, the rep also shut my son out when he tried to approach her concerning his needs. She falsely represented herself as a student councelor, when in fact, she was a sales representative for the school.
Due to all of this, as well as lack of proper instructions from teachers, my son has failed classes not only this semester, but also the prior one. Although he repeatedly approached school personnel, including the Dean, about his needs, he was shut out over and over again.
My son no longer qualifies for financial aid due to a below average GPA, and he owes in excess of six thousand dollars for three semesters at a school where the only thing they care about is the bottom line, ie; the almighty dollar.
As we are unable to afford an attorney, I'm wondering if anyone out there has been able to find any way of slaying this particular dragon. Yes, my son did sign papers that he didn't have time to really read, because he reads slowly due to his disability. But, he was also promised help in order to succeed in an academic setting. Help he didn't recieve.
My question is when, where, and how are the people at the institute going to answer for their obligations? The ones they promise, then don't follow through with. Also, the recruiters are still using IBM as part of their promotions, although I read a report stating that there is a court order prohibiting such use. Thank you for listening.
