When I booked our move with Stevens Moving Storage I origianlly booked them because of their low price and seemingly good service. I was assured that the price I was quoted, $485.00 was what I would pay unless we ran over the 4 hour time window. They even emailed me a written quote.
The day the movers arrived I sat down with one of them and went over their contract. I was told what was included in the base price and what was extra. I was told that extra time would alot for an increse in charge which i was aware of already. I was also told that if any extra packing materials were needed that those would come at an extra cost as well. Never did they tell me that they would be using these "Extra" packing materials on every single piece of my furtinure without my knowledge or consent.
The drive time to our new home was between 45 min and one hour maximum, yet the truck took over an hour and fifteen minutes to arrive to our home as well as didn't follow our car to the new home as we had requested.
Clearly stated in their contract was that they would not unload our items until our balance had been paid, but when they arrived at our new home, the charges they were telling us we owed were over four times the amount I had been quoted. They stated that they were increasing our drive time because it took them longer, and that they had used over $1400 in packing materials, None of which we had authorized.
When we told them we could not pay the $2330 that they were charging us, the movers locked up the truck and we were told that none of our belongings would be returned to us until we paid the full amount we were being charged. To get our entired house full of belongings back we were forced into paying an amount that we had never agreed to in the first place.
So that I could correctly despute the charge on my credit card and towards the company I requested a copy of the contract that I had signed and it was refused to me. The movers stated that they did not have an extra copy for me and they could not give me their only copy.
Not only did they overcharge us, but multiple pieces of our furtinure were damaged including a scratched table and a dresser that they dropped causing the back of it to come off and the bottom of it to be chipped.
We understand that SOME items need to be protectively packaged such as tvs and breakable items, but these movers double and triple packaged items that did not need packaging (such as couches and matresses) just so they could charge us for it. When the movers left, they did not take any of the packaging materials with them and the amount of packing materials they used filled up less than one of our garbage cans. NO WAY being worth $1400!
Stevens Moving Storage took full advantage of a system that does not easily prosecute their actions, but in all forms of the word what they are doing to people is illegal. Changing the terms of a contract clearly counteracts that contract by making it void and I believe that their fruadulent actions should be publasized so that no one else has to suffer for their actions.
