Do not trust the CFL bulb recycling at Home Depot. At my local store it is a toxic danger, and you can see photos of crushed bulbs inside the compact fluorescent recycling bin there.
By the way, the bin stands next to the register where a pregnant cashier works. I calmly spoke to the store manager about this dangerous bin and was angrily told to leave the store.
No sealable bags were in the dispenser by the bin. By the time I tried to put in my wrapped CFL bulbs, every bulb in it was already broken. Customers and employees are being exposed to mercury vapor.
I called the county Environmental Protection Department as well as corporate headquarters of Home Depot. Months later, there is no change. Another Home Depot in my area has the same problem.
The bulbs are not saving me energy or money, either. Using a Kill A Watt meter, I measured that CFLs draw more power than incandescent bulbs for brief use, because I turn lights off when leaving a room. Since I switch them on and off so much, they also last only about twice as long as ordinary bulbs.
Total ripoff.
