After a bidding process, the members of our condo association, accepted a bid for a complete re-roofing of the tallest building in Ocala from Ken Wosyluk Roofing Services, Inc., at the recommendation of one the Association members, a local general contractor. Much less expensive than the other roofing bids, we were assured it was because this general contractor used them often on his jobs and they were very good and were giving us a deal as they did so much work for him.
The city permit was pulled, initial draw was made, work began. We were dealing with Christine Wosyluk, Ken Wosyluk's wife, as the on-site supervisor. Immediately, she came in saying they had onlly bid on one of the roofs, not all of the roofs. The price was adjusted accordingly and work continued.
There were unforeseen extras, as would be expected on a job such as this. Christine was calling or coming by almost daily, needing more draw money. Not very far into the job, according to Christine, Ken just took off in the night. She didn't know where he was, but he had left a note to the effect of see you and the kids in the summer time. This was February.
She looked strung out. We asked if she would be able to finish the job. She said yes, she had it under control. Now we were down to only $3,000 outstanding on our bill. Christine relayed Ken was either in touch with her or had returned home. Our contractor/owner said not to give the final moneys until a walk-through had been done, and to get her to sign an affidavit assuring she had paid all supply invoices pertaining to this job.
Our owner/contractor sent someone over to look the roof over and Christine signed the affidavit, with the understanding that some mishaps caused by them (tar on the carpet, ceiling tile damage) would be rectified by them shortly.
Eight months later we receive notice that we are being sued by the supply company for $16,000 in unpaid supplies for our job. Mind you, none of the repairs have been made and there are leaks showing up. The Wosyluks are contacted, they say they're coming, and never do.
Now, a year-and-a-half later, the leaks are major. We're informed by another company that they had used the cheapest of materials and it should have been sealed. The roofing material they used was brittle and just coming away from the base.
We feel certain it's not an isolated incident. We contacted the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in Tallahassee about this last year. They attempted to mediate it, to no avail, and now have turned it over to the investigations department.
But these thieves are still pulling permits in Marion County. Beware, beware. We have paid in excess of $7,000 in an attempt to seal the roof, but that has not helped. We've paid around $100,000 for roofing and are being sued by a supply company for $16,000 and, surprise, the roof leaks. Don't let this happen to you.
