My expensive side-by-side refrigerator failed within the 5-year warranty period and needed a compressor start device (also called a relay/overload switch). Whirlpool's warranty covers the "sealed refigeration system" but they denied coverage on the grounds that the starter is not part of this system!
This is a blatant deceptive act by Whirlpool. It is consumer fraud.
The compressor can't operate without the start device, and the word "system" along with the word compressor in their list of covered parts implies all the parts necessary to run the compressor are covered. Their warranty is like saying that your "vision system" is covered, but not your retina!
This repair cost $212.50 and should be covered by Whirlpool.
