We bought a SS Amana top-bottom refrigerator/freezer in 2004. Very recently, Nov. it started making a buzzing sound that would last ~ 30 seconds followed by a click. This noise was intermittent though it would often repeat every 3-4 minutes.
It was not a normal sound (as Amana tries to claim on their website), otherwise it should have been doing it for the three years prior.
Last night it seemed to get worse so I read various consumer-related websites and found several others have had a similar problem which eventually led to the refrigerator/freezer to stop working.
Sure enough, this morning we came downstairs to find that the freezer had thawed and the refrigerator was no longer cool. The buzzing/clicking sound continued however, the light was on, the temperature controls were all the same as before.
The problem, according to the online repair advice forums is likely a faulty compressor motor/starter. Given the enormous number of similar complaints found on various websites, I believe it is time to demand Amana, owned now by Whirlpool, recall these products. Is anyone willing to take on a class-action lawsuit to help force this action?
