Can not transfer existing documents from an old HP compte

I've attempted to repeat aged files from A Classic HP Pc to my new horsepower, but can't until I buy a copy of WORKPLACE. Please inform me this isn't required. Any copies that I am attempting to backup can't be achieved without this need. I currently have files on an additional drive, but can't move. Help could be appreciated.
