Progressive Homesite (Homesite Insurance)

Progressive Homesite is the name consumers use for home, renters and condo policies placed through Progressive and written by Homesite companies or affiliates; Homesite's Member Companies page lists the Homesite-named companies in Boston and calls Homesite Group an affiliate of American Family Insurance. This page sets out who the insurer is, the claim and contact routes, how to complain to a state insurance department, the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation consent orders of 2020 (Docket 20-019-I) and May 2026 (Docket 26-010-I) over homeowners cancellations, BBB and Trustpilot figures as displayed on October 11, 2026, and 15 linked posts from 2011 to 2013. Complaints are allegations, and the page gives no rating or verdict.

Claim, cancel, get a refund or complain: who to contact for a Progressive Homesite policy

Progressive's website says that 'Progressive Home policies are placed through Progressive Advantage Agency, Inc. with insurers affiliated with Progressive and with unaffiliated insurers. Each insurer is solely responsible for the claims on its policies and pays PAA for policies sold.' Its list of property carriers (opened 2026-10-11) names Homesite among the homeowners, renters and condo carriers, next to other insurers. The practical consequence is that a policy bought through Progressive may be written by a Homesite company or a Homesite affiliate (the declarations page names it), and that company, not Progressive's auto insurer, handles the claim and the policy.

1. Identify the insurer on your policy. The declarations page names the insurance company, which may carry a Homesite name or be an affiliated underwriter such as Midvale Indemnity Company or NGM Insurance Company (both appear on Homesite's Member Companies page; in Texas the page also names Ranchers & Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and Homesite Lloyd's of Texas for certain coverages, and says 'Each insurer has sole financial responsibility for its own products'). Progressive's property-claims page says: 'Coverage details can vary depending on which company you purchased your policy from. Ultimately, that company handles your claim.' It lists 'Homesite' with 1-866-621-4823 and, separately, 'ASI/Progressive' with 1-866-274-5677, and adds that if you are not sure who your company is you can call 1-800-776-4737 to be connected.

2. File or follow a claim with Homesite. Homesite's FAQ says you can file 'By phone: Call us at 1-866-621-4823 and follow the menu prompts for Claims' or online through its policy login. The FAQ also says a claim may be assigned to 'an independent adjusting company that is hired by Homesite', and that the Homesite Claims Department 'can be reached at 866-621-4823' for help contacting it. If your contractor believes the settlement is low or finds more damage, Homesite's FAQ says it is the policyholder's responsibility to choose a contractor and to review the policy; keep the estimate, photos, receipts and every claim message. Progressive's property-claims page says, for the insurers it places policies with: 'You're free to use any repairer or contractor you'd like to complete the repairs' and 'if more damage is discovered during repairs (that wasn't included on the estimate), your insurer may send you another payment.'

3. Cancellation and refunds. Homesite's pages opened on 2026-10-11 do not state a single cancellation procedure; the Contact Us page lists 1-800-466-3748 and a postal address (Homesite Insurance, 290 Congress Street Suite 400, Boston, MA 02210). Cancellation notice, return of unearned premium and any fees are set by your policy and state law, so ask in writing, keep the date, and quote your policy number. If Progressive handled the sale, its contact line above can route you to the right team. A cancellation can also be checked against state law: a 2026 Vermont Department of Financial Regulation consent order with Homesite Insurance Company states that the Division concluded Homesite 'violated the Vermont insurance laws by improperly canceling certain insurance policies in effect for 60 days or longer' (see the lawsuits and regulator section for what the order says and what it does not).

4. If the company does not resolve it. The NAIC page 'State Insurance Departments' says 'Having a problem with an insurance company or agent? Find your state insurance department and file a complaint.' Use the department of the state where the policy was issued, and name the insurer shown on your declarations page, with its NAIC number if you have it (the Vermont orders list Homesite Insurance Company as NAIC # 17221 and Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest as NAIC # 13927). Separate complaints can mention both the insurer and the Progressive agency that sold the policy.

Who Homesite is, who sells the policy, and what 'Progressive Homesite' means

Homesite. Homesite says on its Our Company page that it was founded in 1997 and 'offers insurance coverage for Home, Renters, Condo, Small Business, Flood, Auto and Pets' (company statement). Its Member Companies page lists the underwriting companies and the states in which each holds a certificate of authority. The Homesite-named companies (Homesite Insurance Company, Homesite Indemnity Company, Homesite Lloyd's of Texas and state-named companies such as Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest and of New York) are each listed with a principal place of business at 290 Congress Street Suite 400, Boston, MA 02210. The same page also lists affiliated underwriters at other addresses: Midvale Indemnity Company (6000 American Parkway, Madison, WI), NGM Insurance Company, Grain Dealers Mutual, Spring Valley Mutual, Old Dominion Insurance Company and Main Street America Assurance Company (4601 Touchton Rd East, Jacksonville, FL) and Austin Mutual Insurance Company (Keene, NH). It says 'Policies are underwritten and issued by member companies and affiliates of Homesite Group Incorporated' and, for Texas, that 'certain property coverages may be written by Ranchers & Farmers Mutual Insurance Company'. The 2026 Vermont consent order cited below describes Homesite Insurance Company as having a principal place of business in Madison, Wisconsin, and the 2020 Vermont order describes Boston (One Federal Street); the company's own page is the source for the Boston address used here.

Ownership. Homesite's Member Companies page states: 'Homesite Group Incorporated is an affiliate of American Family Insurance.', with a footnote naming American Family Insurance Mutual Holding Company, 6000 American Parkway, Madison, WI 53783 (company statement). Homesite's privacy notice (effective April 15, 2026) is issued under the name 'American Family Insurance' and lists, among the group companies it covers, 'Homesite Group Incorporated and the following subsidiaries that provide insurance products or insurance support services'. Pages opened for this profile use the word 'affiliate' and do not show Progressive as Homesite's owner; Progressive's own pages present Homesite as one of several carriers it places policies with.

Progressive's role. Progressive's homeowners page says that the 'homeowners rate and coverage are provided and serviced by affiliated and third-party insurers' and that policies are placed through Progressive Advantage Agency, Inc. Its carrier list for homeowners names American Integrity, American Modern, Bamboo, Hippo, Homesite, Nationwide, Openly, Plymouth Rock, Progressive Home, RLI, Stillwater, Tower Hill and TRUE; for renters it names Homesite and Progressive Home. The label 'Progressive Homesite' is a consumer shorthand that appears in posts on this site; it is not the name of a company on Homesite's or Progressive's pages.

This profile is about the Homesite insurance companies and the Progressive-placed Homesite policies. It does not cover Progressive's auto insurance, which is a different product and underwriter.

BBB. The BBB profile for Homesite Group Incorporated (Boston, MA) displayed rating A+ and 'NOT BBB Accredited'. Its complaints tab showed '460 total complaints in the last 3 years' and '130 complaints filed in the last 12 months'; the reviews tab showed 1.07 out of 5 stars from 'Average of 100 Customer Reviews'. BBB lists other Homesite-named profiles at other addresses, which are not combined here.

Trustpilot. The Trustpilot page for homesite.com ('Homesite Insurance') showed 1.3 out of 5 from 78 reviews and an 'Unclaimed profile' notice; Trustpilot says it does not fact-check reviews. Some reviewers describe Homesite as 'part of Progressive'; that is the reviewers' description.

Posts on this site. 15 approved posts from 2011 to 2013 are linked to this page as complaints about Homesite-underwritten policies, including policies bought through Progressive. Reading them, 7 describe a cancellation or non-renewal notice, 9 describe claim handling or difficulty reaching an adjuster, and 7 mention a refund, return premium, overcharge or check (a post can be counted in more than one group). These are consumers' allegations from 2011 to 2013, not findings, and policy terms and company processes may have changed since. Figures from BBB, Trustpilot and this site are separate sources and are not added together.

Vermont Department of Financial Regulation, Docket No. 26-010-I (2026). A Consent Order entered at Montpelier on May 21, 2026 (Stipulation dated May 18, 2026) in 'In re: Homesite Insurance Company, NAIC # 17221'. The stipulation says the Division 'concluded that Respondent violated the Vermont insurance laws by improperly canceling certain insurance policies in effect for 60 days or longer', following a routine market conduct review. It states that on one occasion in 2023 and on two occasions in 2024 Homesite Insurance Company cancelled homeowners' policies in effect for 60 days or longer citing a substantial increase in hazard without seeking the Commissioner's prior approval (8 V.S.A. section 3879), and that on two occasions in 2024 it sent notices without adequately documenting or preserving a record of the notice (8 V.S.A. section 3883). Homesite agreed to pay a $4,250 civil penalty and $750 to the Vermont Financial Services Education and Victim Restitution Fund. The stipulation is a negotiated resolution: the insurer waived a hearing and acknowledged the Commissioner's jurisdiction, and the order says it is entered solely to resolve the violations identified in it and does not limit a private right of action or the Commissioner's ability to address consumer complaints.

Vermont Department of Financial Regulation, Docket No. 20-019-I (2020). A Stipulation and Consent Order posted on May 28, 2020 with Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest (NAIC # 13927) and Homesite Insurance Company (NAIC # 17221). It states that between November 9, 2017 and July 5, 2019 the respondents mailed 15 notices of cancellation on policies in effect 60 or more days, cancelled for substantial increase in hazard, without the Commissioner's prior approval, and did not use certified mail for 16 notices of cancellation for reasons other than nonpayment; it records that the respondents 'have acknowledged that they engaged in statutory violations' and orders an administrative penalty of $31,000 and updated cancellation procedures. These are findings and terms of Vermont orders about Vermont policies; they do not describe policies in other states, and the two orders are separate documents that are not added together here.

Court dockets. On 2026-10-11 a CourtListener search of federal docket captions containing 'Homesite' returned 704 results. The newest-filed captions displayed included individual policyholders suing Homesite-named companies, with filing dates in early October 2026 (for example Ramesh v. Homesite Insurance Company, W.D. Tex., filed October 9, 2026, shown as a notice of removal); an older example of a Homesite company as plaintiff in an insurance dispute is Homesite Insurance Company v. Newport Group Holdings, L.P., N.D. Cal., filed March 18, 2025. The captions do not state the claims, so this page does not characterize them and lists no court case as a finding.

What was searched. The index pages of the New York and Massachusetts insurance-department enforcement listings were opened on 2026-10-11 and a search for the name Homesite returned nothing there; these are indexes, so that is not a statement about any other state. The Vermont orders were found through the Vermont DFR site and are the only state regulator orders listed on this page. To check a specific insurer, search the enforcement or market-conduct pages of the department of the state where it is licensed, using the exact company name from the policy.

Is Progressive Homesite (Homesite Insurance) Legitimate?

Homesite's Member Companies page lists the underwriting companies, their Boston principal place of business and the states where each holds a certificate of authority; those are the facts to check with a state insurance department. Progressive's page says each insurer in its carrier list is 'solely responsible for the claims on its policies'. BBB displayed an A+ rating with 460 complaints in the last 3 years, and Trustpilot displayed 1.3 out of 5 from 78 reviews on 2026-10-11 (see the complaint-record section). Vermont's Department of Financial Regulation entered consent orders with Homesite companies in 2020 (Docket 20-019-I, $31,000 penalty) and 2026 (Docket 26-010-I, $4,250 penalty and $750 to a fund) over homeowners cancellations and cancellation notices, as described in the lawsuits and regulator section. This page gives no rating or verdict of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who underwrites a Progressive home insurance policy?

Progressive's website says policies are placed through Progressive Advantage Agency, Inc. with insurers 'affiliated with Progressive and with unaffiliated insurers', and its carrier list for homeowners names Homesite among others. The insurer is named on your declarations page.

Is Homesite owned by Progressive?

Homesite's Member Companies page states 'Homesite Group Incorporated is an affiliate of American Family Insurance.' Its privacy notice, effective April 15, 2026, covers Homesite Group Incorporated and its subsidiaries under an 'American Family Insurance' notice. How do I file a Homesite claim?

Homesite's FAQ lists two ways: by phone at 1-866-621-4823 (follow the menu prompts for Claims), or online by logging in to the policy account. Progressive's property-claims page lists the same Homesite number.

Who adjusts a Homesite claim and who chooses the contractor?

Homesite's FAQ says the claim may be handled by Homesite desk and field adjusters or by an independent adjusting company hired by Homesite, and that it is the policyholder's responsibility to choose a contractor.

How do I cancel a Homesite policy bought through Progressive?

Homesite's Contact Us page gives 1-800-466-3748 and a Boston mailing address. Cancellation, notice and return of unearned premium follow the policy and state law (Vermont's 2026 consent order with Homesite Insurance Company concerns improper homeowners cancellations in 2023 and 2024); Progressive's line 1-800-776-4737 connects policyholders to the right company if they are unsure who the insurer is.

Has a state regulator entered an order against a Homesite company?

The Vermont Department of Financial Regulation entered a Consent Order in Docket 26-010-I on May 21, 2026 with Homesite Insurance Company: it states the Division concluded the company improperly cancelled certain homeowners policies in effect for 60 days or longer (one occasion in 2023, two in 2024) and did not adequately document notices on two occasions in 2024, with a $4,250 civil penalty and $750 to a Vermont fund. An earlier Vermont order, Docket 20-019-I (May 28, 2020), involved cancellation notices and a $31,000 penalty. Both are Vermont orders; this page searched only the states named in its lawsuits and regulator section.

Where can I file a complaint about Homesite?

The NAIC directory at content.naic.org/state-insurance-departments links to each state insurance department's complaint process. Use the department of the state where the policy was issued and the insurer name on the declarations page.

What do older posts on this site say about Progressive Homesite?

Fifteen posts from 2011 to 2013 describe Homesite-underwritten policies, some bought through Progressive: cancellation notices after inspection, slow claim handling and refund problems. They are consumers' accounts from those years and are allegations, not findings.
