My air conditioner went out unexpectedly and Tilden Car Care gave me an estimate for replacing the compressor that was nearly $1,000 along with a list of suggested other repairs I did not ask for. The combined total for all these was almost $2,000.
I took it to another shop for a second opinion. He said it was a short in the electrical system between the fans and the compressor. Repair was estimated at $200.
To be sure, I also took my van to the Honda dealership for a third opinion. The dealership shop confirmed the second estimate was correct and gave me an estimate of $250.
