Car rental can be very dodgy. I was 'played' by a couple of guys working for Sundrive Malta car hire.
Papers were filled in by one man and payment taken inside the hotel before seeing the car. The papers were not correctly filled in, his writing was so bad I didn't realise he switched the number plate and model type of the car round.
Guess what? The car was not the size, or model as promised. It had a hole where the passenger mirror was meant to be (it was parked it so I didn't realise until I drove it). His colleague was parked nearby and the two employees made a speedy exit when I went to sit inside the car, before inspection.
I returned it the same day as it was so small it was effectively undrivable (as well as being unsafe) and was promised a full refund. I have had nothing back, having paid for four days use.
Advice? Be very careful to inspect the car first, before signing any documents, to ensure you are getting what you have been promised. Words mean nothing to some folk.

Pay by credit card and make sure any old style paper slip is fully filled in. At least you can try to get some recompense, but don't hold your breath.
And be aware that any 'free car hire' promised by a travel firm probably won't include drivers insurance, and be for a small, basic town car, with no airconditioning.
