I have used professional movers three times. After two excellent experiences, I finally encountered the sort of business the web reviews made me dread.
The move was coordinated by my new employer, and we agreed to use A Moving and Storage in Deer Park, NY because they were Better Business Bureau certified and were local. One web review suggested they used tricks to jack up the price to compensate for not owning enough trucks, so I called and specifically asked about this review and if they owned enough trucks to complete my move.
Imagine my surprise when on moving day a rental truck shows up with three guys from a different company (GPS Movers) who were completely unfamiliar with the terms set-up by my employer. They re-packed several items into a larger box so they could add a box & packing fee, despite the fact that I was in the apartment with empty boxes of my own. They failed to deliver when scheduled, and stored my household in another location, not the local facility that had lead us to choose A. The movers were careless, scratching and damaging much of my furniture, crushing boxes clearly labeled 'Fragile.”
Bottom line: A Moving and Storage pulled the old “bait & switch, ” and the firm they hired was lousy. Do not use these guys, and do not let a BBB certification make the decision for you.
PS - Do your research and you will see I'm not the first to suffer the A / GPS bait-and-switch.
