Over a month ago I placed a reservation by phone with my local U-Haul. I told them I wanted a truck for August 2nd and I gave them my name, address and credit card number to hold the reservation. They then gave me a confirmation number, which I wrote down.
On August 2nd I arrive at the U-Haul location and discover that they don't have my reservation. They say that neither my name nor my confirmation number are in their system. I then tell them that I checked my credit card statement and I was already charged by U-Haul (I figured it was an advance security deposit), so they had to have my information. They continually insist that I don't have a reservation and that they don't have any trucks available.
Finally an employee makes a call to regional or corporate office. He then tells me that I had a reservation for July 19th and I rented a truck that day. I was out of town that day and DID NOT rent a truck. I ask him to show me where I signed for a truck. He checks their files and pulls out a receipt with my name, address and credit card information on it and someone else's signature!!!
When I asked if they checked any ID's he says that they would have checked a driver's license and the credit card. But that would have been impossible! Even if someone wanted to commit an identity theft, how would they know that U-Haul had a reservation for that date (it wasn't even the date I reserved).
I believe that the U-Haul employees sheduled me for the wrong date, then rented the truck to someone else when I didn't show, but still used my information. Now somebody has a receipt with all of my information on it! On top of all that, I never did get a truck and the U-Haul employees offered no reparations. I ended up being lucky enough to find a truck at a local Ryder location (which cost twice as much), but at least I got my move done.
