Bob Lanphere's Beaverton Kia used deceptive tactics in the financing office to get me to essentially pay 3000 dollars over MSRP for a Kia Soul.
First, they made me wait for an inordinate amount of time to ensure that I would be eager to finish the deal by the time I finally saw the finance guy. Then, when I did see him, all three deals he showed me were monthly payments for different amounts than the salesman quoted me outside.
The finance guy cleverly and deftly drew my attention away from the actual amount I would be financing to draw my focus to the monthly payment. All three financing offers he showed me included the dealership warranty. He did everything he could to make it appear that getting the car without the dealership warranty and paint sealant was not possible with the good financing.
I believe this tactic is call "Loan Packing, " where the dealership "packs" the loan with their warranty and other highly profitable "services" in order to increase the size of the financing package.
When I got home, I realized that after a "market adjustment" of an extra 1000 dollars and their warranty package tacked on I ended up paying 21500 for a car that has a sticker price of 18500. I was not shown this number before I signed the contract. The finance guy had to know there was no way I would sign it if I had seen it. There was a lot of paper moving subtly around that desk, blocking certain parts of the contract from view at opportune moments.
No information was technically "inaccessible, " but the finance guy was very clever about which information he emphasized and what he didn't. Obviously the final sale price was not emphasized, or else I wouldn't have paid 3000 dollars too much for the car.
Nothing that has occured between me and the finance department has been above board. If Bob Lanphere's Beaverton Kia really cared about their customers, they wouldn't use deceptive tactics to milk them for more profit.
