My wife and I decided it was time to reduce a car payment, at the time we had an 08 Nissan Xterra, at $456 a month. We were looking for a cheaper car payment, around $350 a month, after being shown cars around $400 a month (typical car salesman technique) we told were shown a car that finally got to $387. We still wanted something cheaper we were shown more cars, one of which being a Focus for $327 a month, neither my wife or I like the Focus, but the price was right, he then found a car the we like more for a bit more, after talking to the salesman we agreed on $368 a month. When we got to financing we were told sign this, that, and the other, NO EXPLANATION what so ever (just like the person that was buying the Audi) after we finished with financing we got out to our nice new car feeling great that we were able to lower the payment. My wife said "but did you notice we are financing MORE than the Xterra and it was like $400 a month?" Thinking no this cant be I removed the Stapled Papers and began looking through them.
First off, we were told the car was a Pontiac G6 GT it was not it was a Pontiac G6 GS with the V6, we were told that there would be no negative rolled into this new car, there was 5400 dollars of negative, and sure enough our payment had gone up to $406 a month. We returned back to the salesman with our concerns and he said that financing would go over and explain it to us, as if we were idiots and didn't understand. We got with Financing and expressed our concerns, the answer we received was "Don't worry about that". Shocked I sat there waiting for more words of consolation, but got nothing. After explaining our situation I was told, "Well we talked about these extra fees did we not?" I said "No we talked about GAP insurance, what about this key replacement fee? Even if it is something nice to have we have no idea we have it because you just told us sign here here and here and there is an extra $800 dollars we owe, what about this life insurance fee?.." we went down the list, and I did get a "I'm sorry I should have explained these better". She then told us that the salesman had returned with a $372 payment not a $368 like you had talked about, frustrated I said that it was fine.
A what could have been great experience was soured, and we were no longer excited about our new purchase, about 4 days later I got a call saying we needed to come in and sign some papers. We got there and it was step 2 all over again with well we made a mistake and we cant do the $372 as discussed so the new payment will be $406. Once again I was explaining our situation, and if this was the case we would just take back the Xterra, "Oh that's not an option!" was the response, "why not?" I asked, "oh we don't do that." So frustrated out of my mind I said so what CAN you do to get our payment back to $372, I was shown the computer screen and told that they were only making $61 on the deal... I did not believe that for a second and said again "What are you going to do to fulfill the contract that I have signed and sitting in the car?" I was told "We can give you $20 in a gas coupon, for a month, whenever you need gas"
So now we have a car that we don't really like is worth $15,000 - $17,000 and owe $24,000 and are paying $416 a month. So trying to get a lower car payment actually cost us $1500 in a down payment, and instead of having $22,000 we now have $24,000 and are paying almost the same a month on a car we don't even want.
My advice is be very VERY cautious when dealing with these guys, DO NOT sign the contract until you have read every dotted I and crossed T.
My experience was so horrible that it actually drove me to create an account here and spread the word, I will be telling everyone I know and everyone I can reach through the internet to stay away from Larry H Miller Used Car Supermarket they are crooks and liars.
