Earl Scheib Paint & Body
Earl Scheib sub-standard body and paint work. Paid for 7 coats of paint and got two rip off scam con artists

Earl Scheib Earl Scheib paint shop 15206 Ventura Blvd. Ste. 200 4224 Chinden Blvd. Sherman Oaks, Calif. 91403 Garden City, Idaho 83714 800-639-3275 208-322-6464 February 21 Modified 2-23-03 To whom it may concern, On February 13 (Thursday) I took my 1986 Chevy suburban to Earl Scheib 4224 Chinden Blvd., Garden City, Idaho 83714, Tel. 208-322-6464. I talked with Doyle Owsley shop manager and stated that I had the interior reupholstered and put in a rebuilt engine and transmission and what I wanted to do to the outside. To fix it up to look really good and to install new front fender, head light trim and holder plus side light turning signal light, front bumper and bumper bracket. (which he did not do). I also asked him to install a new rear bumper all to be the same as what was on my Suburban. I asked him to paint the vehicle Subaru timberline green No. 83. We agreed on three coats of the timberline green no. 83 and two clear coats to protect the color coat, of which one clear coat is an Ultraviolet sunscreen. I asked him to remove the striping and moulding on the sides and rear. I did not argue about the time, or money - which Doyle said about Wednesday the 19th it would be finished. Doyle said he wanted half of the money up front, to buy the parts. I gave him a seven hundred and fifty dollar check. He also asked the check to be in his name. No problem on my part. Wednesday the 19th about 8:30 AM Mr. Doyle tel. Me and said he was having a problem getting the paint color I asked for - asking that I maybe take Earl Scheib paint color. I said no. He said it would take a few days because he had to order the paint from Salt Lake. I said no way and why was he just talking about the paint this late, and that I was getting the feeling I was being screwed over and I did not like it. I said this was the same ploy used approx. 6 years ago by Maaco and that he should go to K.C. Paints which was within one mile of him that makes the paint up for everyone in the area. He said OK. I immediately called K.C. Paints and while I explained the paint color and the girl was repeating it - a man in the background said Doyle had ordered the same paint earlier in the day. Obviously Doyle had been lying to me, apparently looking for more time. I was not rushing Doyle. I called K.C. Paints again the same afternoon and asked about the pearl-based paint. What if any - is there any special thing I should know. He stated the clear coats should be at least four to protect the pearl base color from the sun. I telephoned Doyle and said there should be not two coats but four coats of which he replied he would need $200.00 dollars for the extra two clear coats. I said OK do it. Page 1 of 2 the process I down loaded the Earl Scheib internet site on costs of clear coats etc. The costs for each extra clear coat is $30.00 dollars. I also was told the paint job comes with a 6-year warranty for labor and paint. I tel. Wednesday and Doyle told me he would have it ready by 5: PM and would call me he did not. I telephoned Friday February 21st. 8:30 AM and he said first he could not pick me up. I said I would take a taxi and he said he would pick me up in an hour. Now the vehicle passenger side front fender was to be replaced but was dinged out and of course does not line up in front. The trim around the headlight is not the same it is a different metal and does not fit. Also see the trim around the front blinker light. The rear bumper is not the same as the original one. The original rear bumper had a black rubber insert. The new bumper needs more bumper bolts-but instead of getting the chrome ones needed. They put in rusted head bolts-clearly from a junkyard. Lastly the painting was to be three coats of timberline green #83 (pearl base). With a clear coat of ultraviolet sunscreen and three more clear coats at $100.00 dollars each as I was then told when I picked up my vehicle from Doyle. He said he put on the really good Clear coats. The paint job as I was told by a painting expert was poor because they did not sand the vehicle properly and that is why on both sides of my Suburban there are wavy grinding marks from front to back. The dent in the rear door was partly taken out but still shows because of poor sanding. If there is the paint on my Suburban that I contracted for I will eat the paint. There is no depth-as would be if there were four clear coats of paint. Clearly this Earl Scheib Paint shop is incompetent. The word is fraud. I do not believe this Earl Scheib paint shop knows how to do a professional paint job. You will probably tell me to go back to this shop. If they could not come close to doing a professional job the first time. What makes you believe they will be professional a second time. And going back I have to worry that they will not do something to my vehicle that is not readily seen-just to be vindictive. And yes I paid the full bill with all the excuses by Doyle just to get my car back and so no one can come up with an excuse. (When I complained of the poor workmanship Doyle said the swirls were always there I just didn't noticed-NICE TRY) Where I am now is I will file with the Idaho state Attorney General's office of consumer affairs, the BBB, and lastly if I cannot get any satisfaction-I will file with an attorney and sue for damages (the total aggravation of this situation), car rental costs, and attorney fees. As you can see I am angry at being defrauded. I await your decision. I plan to go to another body & paint shop. Get an estimate and go to small claims court. Respectfully % Frederick C. Mattara P.S.: I was in the process of mailing this letter when I got in my suburban and turned on the lights and the so called new front turn signal light and holder was shorting out and staying on. The rubber covers on the rear doors the ones missing have been sanded right into the metal. The passenger front door where the fender was to be replaced (because it was pushed back due to the accident) and was not - now rubs up against the fender. There is not one smooth spot on my suburban grind marks everywhere. Page 2 of 2 I even telephone the CEO Chris Bement and he hung up. So I have been doing the following: I had my Suburban repaired and repainted by Earl Scheib of Garden City, Idaho. Big mistake. Lousy workmanship. I immediately contacted the Earl Scheib main office in Sherman Oaks, Calif., and they refused to honor their warranty that they say is one of the best in the industry. The local garden City police said they wished Earl Scheib body and Paint shop would leave Garden City because they are tired of hearing all the complaints against Earl Scheib. The Better Business Bureau records say Earl Scheib paint and body nationally has an unsatisfactory business record. It is too bad we have a government that allows these type companies to exist without fining them until they decide to comply to decent business practices. This is my opinion and many others I have talked with. If you get into the same position. With a bad paint job. Do what I am doing. I put an add in the Paper under misc. Auto saying - I got a bad auto. Paint job in (note town or street) ask who? Call (your first name and telephone number). To date in 18 days I have had 20 people who decided not to take their vehicle to Earl Scheib. So far because he cheated me he has lost $11,000.00 minimum in future work. Fight back don't let these type people win. Write your State Attorney General, Better Business Bureau and nationally on the internet there are many fraud sites to list your complaint.
