Won't recall dangerous conditions!

My AC/Heat knob broke completely off one day after months of being very hard to turn. It wasn't just the knob that broke, it was piece that holds it on, located behind the dash. I took it to a mechanic and he explained that this problem is common in that particular model. I then took it to the dealership and even the dealers mechanic said that it was a specific problem with that model. I asked him why it wasn't recalled and he said because it's not a safety hazard.

However I had to purchase an adapter and mini space heater just to defrost my windows ALL winter long. Seeing as my car is now stuck on A/C and I live where it's winter 6 months out of the year, I see that as a major safety hazard. I have no defrost! I have called the Mitsubishi customer service line and they gave me the run around before finally telling me I would have to submit my request in writing, which I did. That was over a year ago. Finally after giving up and needing the repairs done for my own safety I decided to just pay for it to be fixed at which point I found out it would cost over $800! They won't even look at the car without a $150 deposit which is not refunded if you go with a non-dealer mechanic. Boycott this bullshit company.
