Complaint / Review
AARP Auto & Home Ins. From The Hartford
Misrepresentation of their offerings and when assistance needed you are ignored! Washington District of Columbia

I have been wrongfully denied a claim by AARP/The Hartford because they say they do not have a "tel. Recording" of my request to place my stored vehicle back on my policy (I have done this numerous times in the past). This time about a week or 10 days after placing vehicle back on the policy I had an accident in which my car was totaled and my passenger was injured. 2 days later I called The Hartford and was told I had no coverage, that I had taken the car off the policy approx. A month earlier. That is true but I called and placed the vehicle back on the policy (approx 3wks. Later) after weather remained wonderful in N. California. I am told that they record all conversations, that changed to some conversations, then changed to some conversations and notes at 3 service centers, later changed to conversations and notes at 4 service center locations "if" they are not experiencing software problems. I have gotten the run around, been given incorrect information, been lied to, had numerous promises broken. This entwined entity operation is designed to take your money and not provide any help what so ever! You are shuttled from one department back to the other with never an answer to your direct and specific questions. I have asked repeatedly for a chronological order of policy changes for months from each person I talk to and never get the information. I was told by AARP that I wasn't a member&only after repeatedly insisting I was while having, and giving, my 11 year membership # in front of me and the same # on renewal cards in my hand, did they check further and finally admit there was a computer error. I was told by The Hartford Service Center that my policy ran from January to January - again I had to argue that it ran from November to November (NEVER has it run from January to January!). I have kept copious amounts of notes and tel. Recordings all showing what I have said is true. I have been told that the accident report is irrelivant because my claim has been denied, even though the report shows I had insurance (electronically checked by CHP, as required, at the time of the accident & no citations issued). This was also checked by me at DMV 2 days after the accident, "the day" I was told there was no coverage by AARP/The Hartford. Approximately 5 weeks later I was sent a policy statement/bill with the car on the policy. I sent my money in, called and asked for a history of when I placed vehicles on and off my policy again. No luck but later got an over payment check with NO explanation. I keep asking for this information and did for months (prior to the accident)&always nothing. I waited my whole life to get the car I had—never have gone without insurance coverage. I now am in a situation where there is an injured friend and I'm being pursued by his insurance co. (AAA) Incidentally, he knows I placed coverage back on my car, my banker knows I placed coverage back on my car - discussions were had about that because of the weather here during the renewal of a CD. I'm 61, my passenger is 63. I have been diligent, law abiding, I'm meticulous about everything (some say to a fault) including insurance coverage. This is about a friend first and car that was my baby. I am being ripped off and don't want this to happen to anyone else. Trying to contact someone to actually talk to at AARP was harder than contacting the President! When I got someone to respond ([email protected], [email protected]) I was conveniently forgotten because my complaint involved them (AARP). Someone needs to investigate this orchestrated scam designed to exploit seniors and anyone else they can utilizing a supposed respected name&a name (AARP) that leads you to believe they are the ones that offer the product only to abandon you when a problem arises. This represents what's happening to this country&from Wall Street to Washington - the American Dream Has turned into the "AMERICAN SCHEME"! Your help will be appreciated by more than just me. Thank you, Jeff
