Beware! Dealer services scam alert! Beware!

I received a notice in the mail that looked official. It reads:

Our records indicate that the factory warranty on your vehicle has expired or may be expiring soon. As a loyal Chevrolet owner, you qualify for extended vehicle coverage of up to six additional years or 140,000 miles. Only your vehicle qualifies for this program...

Then it goes on and gives you a customer ID # and in big bold letters "CALL IMMEDIATELY."

I didn't think it could possibly be a scam because I do own a chevy truck. Still a little weary, I decided to call anyway. The customer service rep was so accommodating! Who wouldn't be if they knew they were about to rip you off!

He tried to get me to commit to a down payment of 200 bucks and my monthly payments would be $126 monthly. This would include 5 years or an additional 100,000 miles w / $0 deductible. Sounds great! Can't beat that. I explained my truck is a 2002 and I already have or at least what I thought to be high mileage (130,000 miles) - according to him - that's nothing! He didn't even bother to ask me common sense questions like: "Is your vehicle in good shape", "Did it ever need any major repair work", or maybe even "Do you use your vehicle primarily for work or pleasure."

It started sounding really bogus to me so I said the down payment was out of my budget and I couldn't commit to that right now. And guess what? As accommodating as he was he was willing to work out something for me - a deal... Just for me! Yayy! So he puts me on hold for (no lie) 1 whole minute. And guess what!?! He cut the price down to 1/2 what he initially quoted me. This is all after he claimed to have pulled some strings and spoke to his boss. He told me I would have to put the down payment on my credit card to lock in the quote but it would have to be NOW. So I ran to get my credit card. I thought, heck, I have high mileage and I just want to make sure I'm covered. "This can't possibly be a scam" I thought. Just as I was about to give my info, I decided to do a google search - Thank you God that I did because I got bombarded with hits about this company and the scams that they pulled on some very unfortunate people.

My fellow Americans: Be VERY careful when dealing with notices you receive in the mail. Follow the # 1 Rule: If it looks too good to be true then it is!!! Always, Always, ALWAYS do your homework before you commit to something.
