Europcar, Intrum Justitia, Car Broken, Charged For Fuel, Lousy Company Don't Rent From Them
Car Broke down, stranded 20km from Hotel, cost 150 Euros to get to end of journey, then get billed for not leaving (broken down) car full of fuel!

Short version:

Rented a car in Italy for 7 days. On day 6, still in Tuscany, car lost power, and 'check engine' light went on. Rather than damage the car, I called the rental company. They were 100km away in Florence, on a Sunday PM, they had no road service, and said I could come (at 50 EURO reimbursed max) cost to Florence, a 5-6 hour prospect and get the only car they had left, a smaller model. The one we had barely took 4 adults with very modest luggage, and we had to still get to Rome for our flight home the next day.

We opted to have them tow the car for repairs.

We disputed 1/7 of the cost on our credit card.

That stuck.

However, we got BILLED for leaving the car with less than a full tank of fuel, for 73 Euros.!!! If I could have driven the car to fill it believe me I would have.

A year later, Intrum Justitia is dunning me for the 73 euros PLUS collection fees for 43.20 euros, for a total over 120 euro!

Thing is, over ONE YEAR AGO I personally visited their Portland Maine office, (surprising them in the rental agency, nobody EVER goes there!) and thought that an agreeable settlement was complete. I settled for a reasonable discount, and thought the matter was complete.

But nooooooooooooooo as Bill Murray used to say... They now want more money. Luckily they won't get it, and I told them that if they persist in attempting to collect I will post this info on our travel website also, warning people about Europcar and their shady, multi-dimensional deals.

Beware.
