My car had trouble starting one day. It would start and then shut down. I had AAA tow the car to Carter Chevrolet of Manchester CT. Later I called Carter to get the report. I was told that the remote starter was interferring with the anti-theft device. The car thought it was being stolen and then turns itself off.
I was informed that to repair the malfunction would require approximately 4 hours of labour. Labour chrges run $100 an hour. So the estimate was starting at $400.
I told them this was out of the question and called AAA to tow the car elsewhere. Carter Chevrolet would not release the car without a $79 "diagnostic fee". I payed the fee and had the car taken to a nearby independant sevice station.
The independant mechanic looked at the car and then called to tell me he had fixed the malfunction by simply plugging in a wire that had come loose under the dash. Total time: 1 minute, total cost: $0. (plus a $20 tip when I picked up the car the next day)
