Pertronix pointless ignition turned out to be just that - a very piontless exercise in fustration. The module had intermittent failure after just 1500 miles. Before contacting them I went through all standard ignition trouble shooting protocols. I have been building performance cars for 38 years. I found the module was not signaling a collapse of the coils magnetic field. I contacted PERTRONIX phone techs to see if I had missed anything. I had not, but I was asked to make sure it was well grounded. I added a SEPERATE GROUND it made no difference. The module was in fail mode, and I was told by them ONLY THERE EQUIPMENT could check for fault. So I sent them the coil, the module and my contact info. After 4 weeks I heard nothing, and then fed -x dropped of a package containing my old module and coil. With a note from PERTRONIX asserting they tested them and found them "good". Not so fast, I say. I called CRANE CAMS and HEARD THAT OVER 30% of the purchasers of CRANES XR-i ignition module are folks that had "issues" with PERTRONIX. To substantiate this, by mere chance I ordered the crane unit from SUMMIT RACING and there sales rep. Without provocation states that over 30% of there sales of the crane module are to replace PERTRONIX IGNITION MODULES. So after reworking the crane unit to bolt right in as advertised [they fibbed], I turned the key and the engine fired right up. IF your still going to trust a possible FAILURE PRONE PERTONIX MODULE you better carry a spare set of old school points or a CRANE XR-i GOOD LUCK cuz tow bills are more expensive.
