I took my 95 Honda in for their advertised 99$ brake job. After starting the process they called me back to say that they discovered tons of stuff wrong and that it was going to cost 700
bucks to fix it all.
I told them to stop the work and let me pick the car up so that I could take it elsewhere for a second opinion. They informed me that they were going to complete the 99$ job regardless because my husband had signed a release when he dropped the car off.
When I asked him why he was continuing to work on my car when I had not authorized him to continue he said that it was their policy and that we would have to pay them the 99$. When I pressed him further about the 99$ and doing work when I had not okayed it, and the guy's name was Tim, he said... And I quote..."We can't tell how much a job is *really* going to cost until we start working on it".
Now I don't know if he intended to say it that way, but what he did is essentially say that 'no one pays 99$ for new brakes, they just advertise that and then tack on more charges after they get your car on the rack - and if you don't okay the extra work, at least they can still screw you for the 99$'.
While this practice may be legal, and I say *may*, I find it poor customer service behaviour. What Just Brakes should have done is STOP what they were doing to my car when they discovered the so called 700$ worth of repairs and asked me what I wanted to do. At that time I would have explained that I wanted a second opinion and to not do anything to my car. If they wanted to charge a small service fee for their trouble I would understand... But do the 99$ brake job anyway after I told them to stop is unacceptable.
I hope Just Brakes loses business because of this, and I intend to tell everyone I know that they are rip off artists. I am going to take my car to another mechanic next week to see if there really is that much work that needs to be done to my car.
